‘Oppenheimer’ a reminder that we’re still unprepared for nuclear warfare - The Hill

Russian nuclear threats and the lack of preparedness for a worst-case nuclear scenario have become major concerns among global leaders. The Biden administration considers Putin's nuclear threats to be credible. However, the global community, including those in the medical and biotechnology fields, remains unprepared. Advances in medical treatments for radiation poisoning have not kept pace with the growing power of nuclear weapons. Currently, treatments for acute radiation syndrome (ARS) primarily involve bone marrow transplants, which are costly and impractical on a large scale. However, there are efforts to find modern solutions, such as a cell-based treatment that could be administered proactively before and after a nuclear event. Congress has the opportunity to bring public and private innovators together to address this global need.
