A Georgia jury awarded $15 million in a malpractice case related to the care of Byung "Ben" Oh, a 77-year-old Army veteran who passed away after complications from spine surgery in 2018. The jury ruled in favor of Oh's widow and daughter, finding that interventional radiologist Barry Jeffries and surgeon Amy Wyrzykowski were responsible for improper medical care that led to Oh developing a serious condition called a chyle leak, which worsened due to incorrect catheter placement. The case highlighted failures in recognizing critical warning signs and coordinating proper care, ultimately resulting in Oh's septic shock and multiorgan failure. WellStar Medical Center, where Oh received treatment, stated their internal investigation found their team followed appropriate protocols. The jury attributed 67.5% of the fault to the surgeon and hospital and 32.5% to the radiologist and their associated firm.
